My Travels in 2013 - November 11, Vienna, Tiergarten (Zoo) Schönbrunn
My Name is Vladimir
Vladimir is one of the four orang-utans living in the zoo of Schönbrunn in Vienna. He was born 1974 and in 1988 he came from Moscow to Amsterdam. Since June 18, 1991 he has been living in the zoo of Vienna.
The orang-utan enclosure in Vienna consist of an outdoor and indoor area of which the indoor one has many floor to ceiling glass windows allowing visitors and animals to be really close, only separated by a thick pane of glass. When I was there, some of the orang-utans set up camp right on front of those windows often making eye contact with us humans on the other side. I wonder what “they” were thinking but somehow I felt a bit sorry for them as they seem quite bored although their enclosure is definitely nice.
It made me remember both my visits to the Orang-Utan Rehabilitation centers near Kuching in Sarawak, Borneo and Sepilok in Sabah, Borneo where they live in a protected area of the jungle there.
